What does 'chance of precipitation' really mean? A meteorologist explains.

Popular Science

What does'chance of precipitation' really mean? Here's how to figure out if you can leave the umbrella at home. It's not always "when it rains, it pours." Breakthroughs, discoveries, and DIY tips sent every weekday. Understanding the weather forecast can sometimes feel like reading tea leaves.

'Godfather of AI' reveals the startling odds that artificial intelligence will take over humanity

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Scientist and physicist Geoffrey Hinton believes there could be a one in five chance that humanity will eventually be taken over by artificial intelligence. Hinton, a Nobel laureate in physics who's been dubbed the'godfather of AI', made the startling prediction in an April 1 interview with CBS News that was aired on Saturday morning. 'I'm in the unfortunate position of happening to agree with Elon Musk on this, which is that there's a 10 to 20 percent chance that these things will take over, but that's just a wild guess,' Hinton said. Besides his cost-cutting responsibilities in the federal government, Musk is the chief executive of xAI, the company that made the AI chatbot Grok. Musk has said AI will become smarter than the entire human race by 2029.

How ancient tech is thwarting AI cheating in the classroom

PCWorld

Nearly two years ago, ChatGPT's AI writing powers set off a firestorm in classrooms. How would teachers be able to determine which assignments were actually authored by the student? A host of AI-powered services answered the call. Today, there are even more services promising to catch AI cheaters. "My hand cramped up so much," my eldest son complained about his AP World History course he took last year, and the requirement to handwrite all papers and tests because of AI concerns.

The Secret to Living Past 120 Years Old? Nanobots

WIRED

We are now in the later stages of the first generation of life extension, which involves applying the current class of pharmaceutical and nutritional knowledge to overcoming health challenges. In the 2020s we are starting the second phase of life extension, which is the merger of biotechnology with AI. The 2030s will usher in the third phase of life extension, which will be to use nanotechnology to overcome the limitations of our biological organs altogether. As we enter this phase, we'll greatly extend our lives, allowing people to far transcend the normal human limit of 120 years. New survey reveals AI could drive humans to extinction - and top researchers say it would happen by dangerous groups engineering viruses, rulers controlling populations, or threatening economic inequality

Daily Mail - Science & tech

Many tech experts have warned that AI is on a path of destruction, but a new survey of top researchers has quantified the chances of it causing human extinction. A team of international scientists asked 2,778 AI experts about the future of the systems, with five percent reporting the tech will lead to collapse. But, a far more frightening estimation came from one in 10 researchers who said there's a shocking 25 percent chance that AI will destroy the human race. The experts cited three possible causes: AI allowing threatening groups to make powerful tools, like engineered viruses, 'authoritarian rulers using AI to control their populations and AI systems worsening economic inequality by disproportionately benefiting certain individuals.' Artificial intelligence regulation control is the only answer to protecting humans, and if AI isn't regulated, researchers estimated that there is a 10 percent chance that machines will outperform humans in all tasks by 2027, - but it would increase to a 50 percent chance by 2047.

First Melania Statement Since Trump Indictment Is Black Hole of Nonmeaning, May Have Been Written by a Chatbot

Slate

On Tuesday, the "Office of Melania Trump" account on Twitter posted a statement that may have been inspired by recent reports about the ex-first lady in People magazine and Page Six. People's articles, including one published on Monday, cite "sources" who say Melania is currently "angry" at her husband, Donald Trump, and "not comfortable" taking part in any of his campaign events, because his alleged affair with Stormy Daniels is in the news. By contrast, Page Six reported Monday that Melania and the former president "had a major talk over the weekend" and that she has "agreed to be on board" with the campaign. The public wants to know (I guess)! Unfortunately, the Melania statement does not clear anything up, or really say anything at all.

How to Start an AI Panic

WIRED

Last week the Center for Humane Technology summoned over 100 leaders in finance, philanthropy, industry, government, and media to the Kissinger Room at the Paley Center for Media in New York City to hear how artificial intelligence might wipe out humanity. The two speakers, Tristan Harris and Aza Raskin, began their doom-time presentation with a slide that read: "What nukes are to the physical world … AI is to everything else." We were told that this gathering was historic, one we would remember in the coming years as, presumably, the four horsemen of the apocalypse, in the guise of Bing chatbots, would descend to replace our intelligence with their own. It evoked the scene in old science fiction movies--or the more recent farce Don't Look Up--where scientists discover a menace and attempt to shake a slumbering population by its shoulders to explain that this deadly threat is headed right for us, and we will die if you don't do something NOW. At least that's what Harris and Raskin seem to have concluded after, in their account, some people working inside companies developing AI approached the Center with concerns that the products they were creating were phenomenally dangerous, saying an outside force was required to prevent catastrophe.

France vs Morocco semifinal predictions: World Cup 2022

Al Jazeera

The second day of the World Cup 2022 semifinals will pit two-time champions and holders France against Morocco. Kashef, our artificial intelligence (AI) robot, has analysed more than 200 metrics, including the number of wins, goals scored and FIFA rankings, from matches played over the past century to see who is most likely to win on Wednesday. Morocco are currently unbeaten in this tournament and have stunned the footballing world – not once or twice but three times – by beating Belgium, Spain and Portugal. On every occasion, Kashef was left stunned. The only remaining Arab and African team are now just two wins away from lifting the World Cup trophy.

What is it that AI is incapable of accomplishing

#artificialintelligence

An econometrics problem illustrates the difference between artificial and human intelligence. Understanding the tacit knowledge and limits of AI is crucial to implementing it effectively and fairly. One of the only lucid thought experiments ever conducted by econometricians, the "red bus-blue bus" problem illustrates a central drawback that comes with using statistical estimation to quantify the probability that a person will make a specific choice when faced with to various alternatives. As the thought experiment proceeds, imagine that you are indifferent about taking a car or a red bus to work. Due to his indifference, an estimate of his probability of choosing either option is to flip a coin.
